rented a Suzuki Swift with the OH to tour round the island combing for food, but due to lack of time and limited stomach space, we didnt end up as many places as we would like to. nway, this post is full of snippets, so comments will be short, to the point, and let the pics do the talking.
1st place, Queenstown popiah stall at Blk 40A Margaret Drive Food Ctr

the popiah was supposed to be famous, and went on tv b4...

but i tink the pics look nicer den it really was.
next, dim sum supper at Wen Dao Shi (or Wan Dou Sek in Canto), at 126 (so appropriate) Sims Ave, along Geylang Area

chicken claws for her, but i didnt touch it at all, eewww.

char siew cheong fun, had abit of it...so-so only, the ratio of char siew to cheong fun skin was like 1:4! the only special thing was the sauce, which was diff fr all the other black sauces i ate b4 with cheong fun.

har gow...a miserable piece of prawn in a sticky piece of skin....noting to rave abt oso....at least the prawn was relatively fresh.

crabmeat siewmai. skin was stick oso, pork filling abit salty, but at least they used abit of REAL crabmeat. how i know dat? coz i found bits of crab shells in it. "__"

xiao long bao. a great disappointment, coz my impression of xiao long baos was dat there shld be a very 'gao'(thick) and flavourful soup inside it, such dat when u cut it open, the soup juz ooozes out like a mini waterfall! but this 1? no soup at all. juz salty pork filling again. sigh. overall, this place is a disappointment for the relatively high prices they charge. the Mongkok Dim Sum further down Geylang area( near You Tiao Da Wang) is much nicer.
wanted to start the next day with famous porridge from Changi Village, but the food ctr under renovation, so settled for this chicken rice stall opp it, at Blk 2 Changi Village Road

didnt wanna eat too much, so we both shared a plate of rice and 1/4 chicken.

the chicken was very tender, melt-in-ur-mouth kind, although i tink it was becoz they gave us the thigh & drumstick area. and its really not as bloody as it looks, dun worry.

the rice, when it 1st arrived at our table, smelled pretty good, but when i took the 1st bite, i realised there wasnt much taste to it actually. oh well. and its pretty ex, coz the whole set cost us $7.50, and we didnt even ask for the drumstick! oh, but their soup is free flow! not much msg, coz pretty plain, tastes like diliuted veg soup, lol.
went to try the Ghim Moh Mkt @ Blk 20 Ghim Moh Rd, intro-ed by Jeanette. she tried the tau huay at the stall below coz nette found it quite smooth, but she didnt tink it was very smooth wor. and from the pics she took, i dun tink it looks very smooth too. maybe the uncle drop std for that day bah, lol.

heres where i had my Ipoh Hor Fun lunch! got newspaper cuttings and queue de wor!

Ipoh Hor Fun with prawns and chicken for only $2.50.

dun u tink the prawns look big?? haha dun be fooled by the pic, its half the size in reality!

another dessert stall nette intro-ed me...this 1 was much better.

cheng tng on a hot day, refreshing! pretty generous amounts of agar agar, sago, dried longans, barleys, etc. not too sweet, but sweet enough for me. :)
last stop b4 we returned the car, Ci Nai HK Cafe @ East Coast Park Service Rd, next to Macs.

the interesting and colourful deco on the wall, and a big tv screen!

interesting signs on the glass panels of HK's famous areas. heres Sha Tin and Nu Yan Gai (Lady's Street)

and not forgetting, the famous Tsim Sha Tsui!

my drink, Mango King! which was supposed to be ice-blended mango juice with mango cubes and mango ice cream

honestly, the pic looks nicer den it is again. too much ice, too little mango, too milky ice-cream.

HK pan-fried Carrot cake. another disappointment.

noting to wow abt, turns dry when left for sumtime. without the chilli sauce, prob not much taste.

HK Curry Sotong balls. when expectations meet disappointment.

we didnt order this at 1st, but since i was craving to try it and was whining abt it, she had to let me order it to try. in the end, i wished i didnt. it juz tastes like deep-fried frozen sotong balls drenched in super oily prata curry. sigh. i hope the ones in HK will be better. was overall disappointed with this cafe too. but since they r supposedly better in their main courses, i might come bk 1 more time to try the main dishes again.

always wanted to try the beef noodle from this shop coz of all the hype abt it, but nvr got the chance...till today, since we are at bugis, decided to make a trip to its Purvis St branch to give it a try...

before mix....

after mix....OH had the dry beef balls thick bee hoon ($5 small), but she felt it wasnt anyting special...and dun find it as good as its far east sq branch....
.jpg)
before mix....

after mix...i had the mixed beef noodle soup....basically its a mixture of beef slices, beef tripe, beef stomach, beef liver, beef brisket and beef balls in a beef noodle soup...hahaha.....but honestly, i dun find it anyting special too....and i tink the portion is abit too small for its price ($6 medium)....the individual ingredients r cooked pretty ok, noting too bad abt dat, but i felt the soup lacked power and was abit too diliuted....and the service? non-existent. dun tink i will ever go bk to this branch again.
another thing we wanted to try was vietnamese drip coffee, we walked to Madam Saigon along Liang Seah St for it...

due to a pretty blur me, i forgot to take a pic of the drip coffee and its works b4 the waiter cleared the 'equipment' for us....so all i had left was the glass of iced coffee....i dunno if u can see from the pic, but its damn "gao" (thick)! shiok!
and since the OH wanted to have the drip coffee, and felt that it would be so boring if we both ordered drip coffee, i decided to order tea instead....

strawberries and cream tea in a small metal teapot and a cute glass cup.....quite nice though...the strawberry smell and taste were pretty fragrant and sweet....but my excitement dropped a little when i saw dat it was actually in a teabag...oh well, guess i was expecting sumting abit more special..haha....

the cute oriental sugar container dat came with the tea....the OH liked the tea more, so i tink we shld have exchanged the drks in the beginning so i could get a pic of the drip coffee! nvm, i will be looking ard for more drip coffee! :)

went to NYDC for desserts after GM talk on thurs with the 3 angels above and Lendar (the princess that doesnt want to be featured)
here are the 3 desserts dat we shared:

1st up, Dat Boney Cake! didnt eat dis so cant comment. 1 phrase to chip in though, guilty pleasure!

2nd up, Cookie Crumble Mudpie! shared this with Lendar, and honestly, its juz like a big triangle of choc ice cream on a choc cookie base drenched with dark choc sauce. full of choc!

3rd of the medley, Priscilla's Favourite! Jan's order, so according to her, the cheesy cheesecake should be eaten tog with the chewy Double choc chip ice cream (which according to her, doesnt melt easily wor!) to achieve the yummy effect! but she mentioned that the standard have dropped since 10yrs ago, although she still swears by its mudpies and baked rice. :)

accompanied the OH and LS to shop at Bugis, and juz when i thought my hopes of trying the famous Hock Lam Beef Noodles ard there was dashed and we had to settle for either sum commercialised cafe or sum unknown hawker stall for dinner, i was intro-ed this place dat supposedly serves a pretty gd fish head steamboat (鱼头炉) and fish beehoon.

when we were there, the whole place was packed with pple, and we had to wait awhile outside for available tables. dat was 1 gd sign. lucky we weren't a big grp, so managed to share a table with an auntie. the interior looks like a small tze char place, with tables pretty close to each other and servers shouting to the kitchen and darting all across the place with plates and bowls.

had my usual order for fish beehoon, "鱼片米粉汤, 幼米粉, 不要奶". in my life so far, the best fish beehoon i tasted was the 1 near my office (which has always been the yardstick to measure my fish beehoon), which always has a queue from 11.30am onwards, and is always sold out b4 3pm. this 1 is actually not too bad, prob can be in my top 3 (coz fish beehoon isnt exactly my fav dish, heh). the fish is not too fishy, prob coz of the ginger slices, but its not as smooth as the 1 near my office. but the soup is flavourful, and doesnt leave me too thirsty after dat, which means there isnt an overload of MSG in it. the beehoon still has its bite, while absorbing sum flavour from the soup. the vegs r still crunchy and not overcooked, but sadly its not my fav cabbage, which the stall near my office uses. overall, not too bad a bowl of fish beehoon. but not too cheap, at $5.20.

prawn paste chicken. this was 1 dish dat we saw nearly every table ordering, so of coz we had to have 1 ourselves! its not too bad oso, even though we left it on the table for awhile while we finished our beehoon, it still remained crispy on the outside, and a little juicy on the inside. although 1 thing i always dun understand when i eat this dish, wheres the prawn paste in the prawn paste chicken???
,10:50 PM
finally set foot inside a cafe i have always walked past, looked in, but nvr went in b4: Food for Thought! heard abt it pretty long ago, and always made a mental note to visit it 1 day, but it always slipped my mind.
Nway, the interior is pretty cosy, with a few double-seating tables lining the wall, opp from the bar/food counter, leaving only enough space for a big-sized person to walk sideways into the other end of the cafe, which has 4-6 bigger tables to seat bigger grps.

one of the sides of a card dat was placed on every table for guests to write comments or simply draw on it. pardon my lousy camera hp again, but i love the phrase on it which reads: Say No to Bad Food, which is wat i advocate!

we went there specially for desserts, so i tried 1 of their homemade cakes, Chocolate Banana Maltesers cake. and seriously, choc+banana seldom goes wrong, but this cake is 1 of the much much better versions i tasted! the choc sponge is soft and moist, banana slices are sweet with a distinct banana taste (means they r fresh!) and the choc coating is not too thick or too sweet. NICE!

this next dessert, however, is a killer! i mean for diabetic patients. the amount of sugar (in all its various forms) in this seemingly small cup of harmless-looking thing is indescribable! u have to try it den u will know. but a warning to u, better share it with others. this Butterscotch Peach Crumble is in their list of signature desserts, and its basically like its more well-known traditional sister, apple crumble, juz dat the apple is replaced with canned peach pieces. in addition, there are bits of raw sugar dat u can still taste (and crunch) in the crumble, and its finally topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, and drizzled with choc sauce.
Now u know how sweet is it.
but i will be bk for their sandwich sets, pasta and more cakes! :)
oh, and their proceeds are also donated to charities ard the world, such as World Vision.

dad wasnt satisfied with his bdae dinner the other time, so we went to try a revamped old restaurant called Punggol Choon Seng dis time at his request. located in an old colonel bungalow along TurnHouse road (opp SIA Swimming Club), its so ulu, i tink it will be hard to come in here without a car.

heres extracts of their intro:
"Established in 1956, Punggol Choon Seng is synonymous with the best in the seafood business. Life for the restaurant began at the Punggol End Jetty...........Situated by the sea, Punggol Choon Seng obtained the freshest seafood daily and henceforth, the signature Famous Chilli Crab was born..........Our Success is the result of a long history of good food and friendly service."

both the interior and exterior maintained sum colonial influence from the past, as seen from the windows, flight of steps leading to the main door and hanging chandeliers. there was also a live band playing every fri nite.
we picked mainly their specialities, but honestly, i feel that the portions are too small for the price, and the quality was not dat bad, but not fantastic either.
1st dish was Crispy duck popiah, which was half a roasted duck, fried till crispy and cut up into shreds in front of us by the waitress, with sum popiah skins which was placed in a warmer to maintain its temperature and softness, and a plate of cucumber and spring onion shreds

we were den supposed to wrap the duck and vegs ourselves, like eating peking duck popiah.

the duck was pretty crispy, skin not too hard, generally pretty ok, but noting very interesting

next up was supposed to be Curry baked prawns, but when i saw the sight of it (pic above), was quite disappointed. Firstly, i didnt expect the prawns to be drenched in a thick laksa-like sauce, thought it would be a dry baked prawns with curry leaves to enhance its flavours or sumting like dat. the sauce really tasted like laksa though, and granny commented that she could cook dis dish herself at home too. the prawns were a little overcooked, coz the shells kept sticking on the prawns, making it hard for me to peel them off without making a mess of my fingers. urgh. but on a sidenote, the laksa gravy quite nice to go with plain rice though, haha.

for vegs, we had Stir-fried Asparagus with Mushrooms. nothing special too, juz dat the portion was really very small lah!

next up was a speciality, Red wine Pork Ribs. the meat wasnt too tough, and the sauce tasted like those in Coffee Pork Ribs u get in Zi Char Stalls, minus the coffee, plus a teeny bit of red wine. pretty ave though.

this was supposed to be their Signature Mee Goreng, which was very famous back then when they 1st started. dad even said dat he always bring mum here for this when they were pa-toh-ing, coz it was 1 of the few presentable and nice seafood places at that time. haha. their Mee Goreng is slightly diff from the malay ones we r familiar with here, its wetter with more gravy, and has less tomatoes in it. a decent amt of seafood and other ingredients in it though, too bad i didnt get to eat the plump little prawns u see in the pic. pretty spicy though, when it 1st enters ur mouth, u dun really taste much spiciness, but when u chew on it and swallow, thats when the chilli hits the back of ur throat! but if its still acceptable for me, shld be ok for most Singaporeans lah.

we were still not too full yet, so added a last dish in their specialities menu, Yam with scallops and cheese.

tried to take a pic of wats inside those deep fried yam balls, but my camera fone not too gd lah, heh. anyway, its basically yam paste wrapping a piece of scallop and sum cheese inside, covered with breadcrumbs and deep fried. nothing too special too. and the portion was so small, we each only have 1 small ball lah! grrr, lucky i dun really like yam.
on a whole, food pretty ok to me only, but quite expensive. but i like the secluded feel of its location, and the grandness of the high ceiling in the bungalow. maybe i m juz too picky lah, heh.
